Milton Viorst has written from the Middle East for the Washington Post, the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic, and the New Yorker. Among his books are Sandcastles: The Arabs in Search of the Modern World (Knopf, 1994); In the Shadow of the Prophet: The Struggle for the Soul of Islam (Westview Press, 2001); and What Shall I Do With This People? Jews and the Fractious Politics of Judaism (Free Press, 2002). A book on Arab nationalism will be published by Random House in 2005.
