Henry Somerville (1889 - 1953)

Born in Leeds, England, Somerville was the son of working-class parents. At 21 he got a job as sub-editor on a Catholic weekly newspaper and after a few months got a scholarship at Oxford. He was one of the earliest and most active workers for the Catholic Social Guild. After leaving Oxford he devoted himself to writing on social questions and lecturing for the Catholic Social Guild. His books include Civics: A Manual for Schools and Britain & Economic Illness.
